Two families of tools: number reading vs vehicle recognition
The first family reads the race number painted or stickered on the vehicle (OCR), then matches it against a start list. It works well in championship racing where numbers are mandatory, large and clean. Its limit is structural: every photo where the number is absent, masked, motion-blurred or simply on the other side of the car falls back to manual sorting.
The second family recognizes the vehicle (or rider) as a whole — shape, livery, colors, gear — and groups all the photos of the same vehicle together, number visible or not. This is the only approach that covers trackdays and open pit-lane days, where most road cars carry no number at all.
